Little Italy

Sights & Landmarks • San Francisco, California United States

Officially called North Beach, this neighbourhood has long been the home to San Francisco's numerous Italian-American population. It is also the place where the Beatnik culture was born and where writers such as Kerouac or Ginsberg lived and created their works.

Centred around the Columbus Avenue and the Washington Square, the district still manages to keep an Italy-like atmosphere, even though the days when it was only populated by Italians are long gone. The visitors may stroll through cafés, pizzerias, gelaterias, and restaurants cooking Italian food around every corner.

The district is easy to recognize, as even today there are Italian flags visible on the lamp posts.
